  • Why St. Elmo?
It has nothing to do with the movie. Our
national history page has a full explanation, but the term 'St. Elmo' has been in use at this chapter since the 1890s. It refers to St. Elmo (Erasmus, Bishop of Formiae), the patron saint of mariners. The Knights of Malta, from whom Delta Phi takes its distinctive cross, were mariners.
